Skyscraper – A barefoot hero in the middle of a fire tower, it’s just The Rock!

The story of Skyscraper begins when FBI agent Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) loses a leg in the mission. After retiring, he open a security consulting company for skyscrapers. Will is billionaire Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han) invite to Hong Kong to check the safety measures for the tallest tower in the world.

You can probably deduce what happens next: one-and-a-half hours of Johnson, as security expert and father-of-two Will Sawyer, kicking ass, taking names, and absolutely owning the sky-high tower and the villains in every way imaginable.

This is standard summer blockbuster fare, with lots of explosions, last-minute jumps and feats of physicality that would be absolutely unbelievable with anyone else in the starring role (OK, except for maybe Tom Cruise). The Rock’s beastly physique makes you question your own questioning; if anyone is able to pull off these insane moves, it’s him.

The family of the former agent also became the first residents of the Jade Tower. But the joy is not complete when a terrorist group is determine to burn down the building. Will Sawyer is forced to race against the fire and even professional mercenaries to rescue his trapped family.

After starring in a number of blockbusters such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Rampage or Fast and Furious, The Rock became one of the leading muscle action stars in the world.

This time, he continue to “weigh the entire universe” alone when appearing in Skyscraper.

However, his opponent this time was not only a group of mercenaries holding ordinary guns but also a height of 1,100 meters of a skyscraper.

Of course, the filmmakers have exploite this element of horror extremely well. Dwayne Johnson is like a King Kong swinging in the sky at a height that makes it difficult for the faint of heart to look at the ground. Panoramic angles taken interlace throughout the film can make those who are “hardest” also shudder spine.

The ledges creak with wind soaring as the test of the ability to hold the audience. Not only that, the director Rawson Marshall Thurber cleverly add a series of “sudden” footsteps that made the audience feel heart-stopping.

Will Sawyer’s artificial leg made the swinging scenes more dramatic because of waiting … falling out. Not only that, the former FBI agent also offers many action and melee combat.

However, perhaps because of the focus on the skyscraper, the filmmakers forgot the script element.

The content of Skyscraper contains so many silly holes. Dubbed as the most expensive and most secure building in the world, Ngoc Tower has a very superficial defense system and is easily hack to an unbelievable level.

Although the building is over 200 stories high, Zhao Long Ji transferre all of the security control to a tiny tablet without any preparation. After that, he entrust everything to Will Sawyer – an employee who only met right … once.

Even though he only want to rob an item of a billionaire, the criminal group led by Kores Botha still want to burn the whole tower to attract the attention of police and people around the world. The group’s escape plan was also ridiculously simple.

The defenders of Hong Kong’s order and security were “too useless”.

Whether they see the house on fire or fight with a gun, they still do not intervene but just sit around to … ask the situation and express their deep concerns. Even the simplest investigative actions are conduct by others.

They barely have any effect in the movie and seem to be just helping the audience from questions. The terrorists were ridiculous, the police line was built even more superficially.

Will Sawyer almost had to do both the part of the police and the criminal group throughout the film. He was like a … superman climbing the tower on the 96th floor with only bare hands and … duct tape. After that, the former agent continue to fly, fight, swing or even be hit by bullets for nearly 100 minutes of film without getting tired. To say no more, Skyscraper is almost a private playground for The Rock to show freely.

The acting of the cast in the film is nothing special when there is not much land to show.

Villains only act as “cool” is the main. Meanwhile, The Rock is both a father who loves his children and a muscle warrior like any other movie.

Overall, Skyscraper is quite entertaining but does not leave much impression and meaning, especially when compared to the classics inspired by the film Die Hard (1988) and The Towering Inferno (1974).

With a panache worthy of Oscar Wilde, Johnson delivers lines such as: “This is stupid!”

Oliver Jones
Along with Johnson’s rippling physique and heroic fingertips, the film’s chief asset is the creatively conceived title object-the very tall building.

James Berardinelli
It would be fair to say that Skyscraper does what it sets out to do but the unambitious agenda isn’t something I’m especially interested in watching.

Matthew Lickona
The pleasures here come from watching an extraordinary physical specimen go through a lo-tech workout routine thousands of feet above the ground as he tries to rescue his family from a burning superskyscraper.
